The Historica-Dominion Institute mourns the passing of John Babcock, Canada's last veteran of the Great War.

Mr. Babcock was Canada's last living link to the generation who served and died in the First World War. Read his story in the Institute's Memory Project Digital Archive.

Join us in urging the Government of Canada to declare a National Day of Commemoration - in his honour and in honour of the more than 600,000 Canadians who served, and 68,000 who died, in the First World War.

A National Day of Commemoration will give all Canadians - young and old - an opportunity to pay tribute to the service and sacrifice of an entire generation of brave men and women and to reflect on the impact that the First World War had on our country.

A National Day of Commemoration for all Canadian veterans of the First World War could be held on April 9, 2010 - Vimy Ridge Day.

State Funeral

On November 21, 2006, the House of Commons unanimously adopted a motion to offer a state funeral for the last veteran of the First World War. The motion was a response to an online petition by The Institute, which was signed by more than 90,000 Canadians.

The Institute has learned that the Babcock family has declined the offer of a state funeral made by the Government. We fully respect their wishes and offer them our condolences.

The torch of remembrance has now been passed from Mr. Babcock's generation to ours.

John David “Johnny” Burke

It is with heavy hearts and deep regret that we announce

the passing of John David ‘Johnny’ Burke

of Main-a-Dieu at Taigh Na Mara Veteran’s

Home, Glace Bay Saturday, February 28th, 2009

where he has resided since November 2006.

Born in Main-a-Dieu, Johnny was the son of the

late John David and Annie (Mountain) Burke.

Johnny was the last surviving member of his immediate

family.

Johnny enlisted in the army at a young age and

served overseas with the Cape Breton Highlanders

during the Second World War. When he returned

home, he began fishing and married his

sweetheart the late Barbara Burke of Little Lorraine

who passed away in 2007 after 60 years of

marriage.

Together they raised seven children, daughters,

Marilyn (Gerry) Goyetche, Margie (Arthur)

Kennedy, Debbie (Harvey) Sharpe, all of Maina-

Dieu and Penny (Mike) Hemmings of Sydney;

sons, Fr. Bill ‘Billy’ Burke, Ottawa, Kenzie

(Charlene) Calgary, Joe (Debbie) Louisbourg

and special son Howard (Valerie) Oehman of

Halifax; 11 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Johnny is also survived by many nieces

and nephews, who enjoyed his great sense of

humour.

Besides his parents and wife, Johnny was predeceased

by sisters, Margaret, Mary and Catherine;

brothers, Joe and Basil.

"I wish I could embody on paper some of the varied sensations of that seventeen days .... Seventeen days of Hades! At the end of the first day if anyone had told us we had to spend seventeen days there, we would have folded our hands and said it could not have been done" A young friend and former student of Major McCrae, Lt Alexis Helmer of Ottawa, had been killed by a shell burst on 2nd May. Helmer’s death particularly affected Major McCrae. Lt Helmer was buried later that day in the little cemetery outside McCrae’s dressing station, and in the absence of the chaplain, McCrae had performed the funeral ceremony. Sitting on the back of an ambulance on the next day, McCrae started to compose a poem with sentiments of his pain and anguish. In 1915, at the second battle of Ypres, he wrote in pencil on a page from his dispatch book a poem that has come to be known as “In Flanders Fields” which describes the poppies that marked the graves of soldiers killed fighting for their country. McCrae could see the wild poppies that sprang up in the ditches and he spent twenty minutes of precious rest time scribbling lines in a notebook. Cyril Allinson, who was a young twenty two year old sergeant major at that time, watched McCrae write it. Allinson was delivering mail that day when he saw McCrae. The major looked up as Allinson approached, then went on writing while the sergeant major stood there quietly. Allinson recalled “His face was very tired but calm as he wrote”. “He looked around from time to time, his eyes straying to Helmer’s grave.” When he finished five minutes later, he took his mail from Allinson and without saying a word, handed his pad to the young soldier. Allinson was moved by what he read.

"On the afternoon of Sunday May the 2nd, the 2nd Battery is being strafed heavily. Lieutenant Alex Helmer had left his bunk. En route, an eight inch lands on him, blowing him to pieces. As soon as the strafing stops, a couple of his men go to the burying ground and dig the grave. The others go around the area, picking up as many of the pieces as they can find to put into sand bags, which are then laid into an army blanket in the form of a body. A small group gathered together and John McRae recites part of the burial service, which we all are familiar with: "I am the resurrection, and the life." John McRae was terribly moved. Alex Helmer had been one of his close friends. Shortly after that, he went and sat on the ambulance, looking at the grave and then writing the original version of 'In Flanders Fields'.

Dissatisfied with it, McCrae tossed the poem away, but a fellow officer retrieved it and sent to the newspapers in England. “The Spectator” in London rejected it, but “Punch” published it on 8th December 1915. To this day McCrae’s “In Flanders Fields” remains one of the most memorable war poems ever written, with its lasting legacy of the terrible battle in the Ypres salient.

McCrae was a chronic asthmatic, and his lungs had been badly damaged by the chlorine gas at Ypres.
On 25 January 1918, he fell ill with pneumonia, and in three days he was dead.

Harper is no friend of Canadian veterans

Canada in added help for veterans and
veterans’ widows. An election promise
by Mr. Harper has never been kept.
Harper promised to give back the Veterans
Independent Program (V.I.P.).
Broken promises bring broken trust and
disgrace to our veterans and veterans’
widows.
Veterans and veterans’ widows are
most important. The ageing population
people who need extra V.I.P. benefits
today are great.
There is one veteran’s widow willing
to fight for what is rightfully theirs and
the battling lady is Mrs. Joyce Carter
from Sampsonville, Cape Breton. Mrs.
Carter has and still is putting in numerous
hours, days, weeks, months and
years of hard dedicated work, writing
letters to the editors to be read in newspapers
across Canada and all government
sources and including Mr. Harper,
also Mrs. Carter appeared on television
discussing the V.I.P. issue.
As it stands today, Harper leaves the
veterans and veterans’ widows in need
of extra assistance waiting while he
( Harper) stands alone with the iron-fist
attitude to the issue at hand.
These veterans and veterans’ widows
need the help today Mr. Harper, give
back what is rightfully theirs, the V.I.P.
full benefits.
Come good on your V.I. P. promise
and make Nov. 11 another reason to
remember our veterans.
Give the V.I.P. before R.I.P. becomes
reality for all veterans and veterans’ widows
that is rightfully theirs in the first
place.
Let go the iron fist Mr. Harper and
sign the Veterans Independent Program
policy today and honour your promise,
show some respect for all the remaining
veterans and veterans’ widows left in the
cold for much too long a period.

Veteran On The 10 dollar bill

If you have a Canadian $10 bill, look at the back right side of the bill.
You will see an old veteran standing at attention near the Ottawa war memorial.
His name is Robert Metcalfe and he died last month at the age of 90.
That he managed to live to that age is rather remarkable, given what happened
in the Second World War.
Born in England, he one of the 400,000 members of the British Expeditionary Force
sent to the mainland
where they found themselves facing the new German warfare technique - the Blitzkrieg.
He was treating a wounded comrade when he was hit in the legs by shrapnel.
Enroute to hospital, his ambulance came under fire from a German tank,
which then miraculously ceased fire.
Evacuated from Dunkirk on HMS Grenade, two of the sister ships with them were sunk.
Recovered, he was sent to allied campaigns in north Africa and Italy.
Enroute his ship was chased by the German battleship Bismarck.
In North Africa he served under General Montgomery against the Desert Fox, Rommel
Sent into the Italian campaign, he met his future wife, a lieutenant and physiotherapist
in a Canadian hospital.
They were married in the morning by the mayor of the Italian town, and again
in the afternoon by a British padre.
After the war they settled in Chatham where he went into politics and became
the warden (chairman) of the county.
At the age of 80 he wrote a book about his experiences and on his retirement
he and his wife moved to Ottawa. One day out of the blue he received a call from a government official
asking him to go downtown for a photo op.
He wasn't told what the photo was for or why they chose him. He had no idea he would be on the bill, his daughter said.And now you know the rest of the story of the old veteran on the $10 bill.

Arthur Hugh Dominey
89, Louisbourg
It is with great sadness that we, the family announce the passing of Arthur Hugh Dominey which occurred Nov. 22, 2006, at the Cape Breton Regional Hospital, Sydney.
Born in Burgeo, N.L., he was the son of the late Charles and Sophie (James) Dominey.
Art was a veteran of the Second World War serving in the merchant navy. Later he worked for the Quebec and Ontario Trans¬portation Co. as a wheelsman on the Great Lakes ships. He retired in 1982.
He was a member of the Mariners Lodge No. 80 and a lifetime member of the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 62.
Art will be remembered for his large Christmas displays that included many models of naval ships. He will be missed by family and many good friends.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Mary (Maclntyre) Dominey; son, Arthur
Jr. and two daughters, Sandra and Darlene (Albert); six grandchildren; eight greatgrandchildren; one sister, Cassie, Montreal; and one brother Fred, Burgeo.
Besides his parents, he was predeceased by four sisters, Sophie, Mary, Meg and Eva and three brothers, Charles, Ward and Hubert.
Visitation for the late Art Dominey will take place today (Friday) from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the First United Church, Louisbourg. Funeral service will be held 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 25 at the First United Church, with Mr. Darius Powell LPMiT officiating. Burial to follow in Willow Grove Cemetery, Louisbourg.

Arthur Dominey
was born in Burgeo NF April 16th 1917. He Joined The Merchant Marine in 1940 transferred to the army for 4 months and asked to be returned to the Merchant Marine. He first served on the S.S Mariposa, in a convoy of 46 ships and 5 lost. He also served on the The Lord Kelvin and Galarite and he served as boson on the Evelyn B. The Evelyn B escaped as several ships were torpedoed in Wabana NF and helped rescue survivors. He Joined the Legion in 1947 and was bartender for many years. He is noted for his large Folk Art renditions of various ships

Thanks to you and the over 90,000 people who signed our petition for a State Funeral for the last veteran of the First World War, the Parliament of Canada unanimously passed the following motion introduced by M.P. Peter Stoffer on Tuesday, November 21:

"That, in the opinion of this House, the Government of Canada should honour all who served Canada in the First World War by sponsoring a State Funeral on the passing of the last Canadian veteran of this Great War."

This binding motion will ensure that at the appropriate time the family of the last veteran of the Great War will be offered a full State Funeral to recognise the service and sacrifice of their loved one and the 600,000 fellow Canadians who served under arms from 1914 to 1918.

This brings to a conclusion the Dominion Institute's public campaign for a State Funeral for the last First World War veteran.

NDP seeks consent for state funeral

Last WW1 vet should be honoured

OTTAWA -- The New Democratic Party will ask Monday for all federal parties to agree to offer a state funeral to the last Canadian veteran of the First World War.

Just three of those men still are still alive, and all of them are 105 or 106 years old.

Their dwindling numbers and advancing years have created a surge of support for a Dominion Institute proposal to follow the example of Australia, which held a state funeral for the final survivor of the Battle of Gallipoli. By yesterday afternoon, more than 85,000 people had signed a petition on the institute's website asking that the Canadian government offer the family of the last veteran a similar honour.

"We are going to ask the other party leaders on Monday for unanimous consent to consider a motion to have a state funeral when the last of the World War I veterans passes away," NDP Leader Jack Layton said yesterday.

The war was "immensely significant" in Canadian history, Mr. Layton said, and a state funeral would provide "an opportunity for us to remember an entire generation that fought for our country in its early years and made enormous sacrifices."

Rudyard Griffiths, executive director of the Dominion Institute, said there is some urgency to say publicly that this is what Canada as a nation wants to do. The NDP motion would "get the ball rolling," he said.

"If we want to make this into a national, large-scale commemoration, that's going to take time and it's going to take resources," Mr. Griffiths said. "It's not something that any government can turn around in a matter of a few weeks."

But Mr. Layton will need the support of all four federal parties for the matter to be dealt with quickly. Without unanimous consent of all House leaders, it will go to the end of the queue of motions to be put to the House of Commons.

Obtaining that consent could prove problematic.

Rodger Cuzner, the Liberal critic for veterans affairs, said he believes a state funeral would be a noble gesture and he will urge his party to support the NDP proposal.

"Historians are unanimous in pointing to [the 1917 battle of] Vimy Ridge as the single military battle that allowed Canada to emerge as a true nation," Mr. Cuzner said. It's important, he said, to do what "we can do to bring us back and remind us of that."

The Bloc Québécois has also said it will support the motion.

But the Conservatives may not.

A spokesman for Veterans Affairs Minister Greg Thompson said yesterday his department is consulting with veterans groups and other federal departments, and until the Conservatives actually see the NDP motion, they can't say whether they will back it.

The Canadian Legion, meanwhile, points out that Jack Babcock, one of the three surviving Canadian veterans, has lived in the United States since 1924 and would not be entitled to a state funeral in Canada, something Mr. Babcock says he understands.

"The Legion has asked the government for some time now to host a significant event on the passing of the last World Ward I vet," said Bob Butt, the Legion's director of communications. A state funeral would be an option for the other two, but it would have to be some other type of recognition if Mr. Babcock is the last survivor, he said.

A poll of 1,013 Canadians conducted last month for the Dominion Institute found that three out of four respondents agree with the proposal for a state funeral for the last First World War veteran. While support varied across the country, in no region was it below 69 per cent.

Mr. Layton said he has been persuaded by the arguments for the ceremony and he says he has seen the groundswell of support for the idea.

"I think the significance of that particular passing is one that really represents something fundamental in our history and a great gift that was given to all of us who never had to experience the horrors that they had to experience in those trenches and in those famous battles," Mr. Layton said.

"We the undersigned feel enormous gratitude for the sacrifice made by all the Canadian Armed Forces through the ages in defence of this country and its values; acknowledge the very special nature of the sacrifice made by those who fought in the First World War in appalling conditions and with terrible loss of life; note that only three First World War veterans remain, and urge the Prime Minister that their sacrifice, and all of those they served with under arms from 1914-1918, be celebrated by offering a state funeral to the family of the last veteran of the First World War resident in Canada."

It is with great sadness, that the family announces the passing of Gerard Kelly,
which occurred at home, Saturday, Oct. 21, 2006,
surrounded by his loving family.
Gerard passed peacefully and with the same
pride and dignity that he lived his life.
Born in Old Town, he was a son of the late
Lawrence and Louise (Ranson) Kelly. Gerard was
a veteran and served his country in Germany and Egypt He retired from the Royal Canadian Air Force after 25 years of service. He was an active member of the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 62, Louisbourg His Pride and Joy was the construction of the Veterans' Memorial Park in Louisbourg.
He is survived by his loving wife, the former
Hazel Balser; one daughter, Wendy, Sydney; one y son, David, Digby; brothers, Joe (Vera), Hornes Road and Bob (Eve), Catalone; three sisters, Mary (Abe) Pelley, Cambridge, Ont. Levenia Walsh, Catalone and Sandra (Francis) Burke, New Glasgow.
Gerard is also survived by his mother-in-law' Mrs.Winona Balser, Digby; three brothers-in-law, Charlie Balser, Georges River, Willard (Debbie) Balser, Digby and Oscar n (Eleanor) Balser, Bear River; three sisters-in-law, Laura (Howard) Prime, Digby, Jean (Emanuel) T Lawrence, Halifax and Ruth Anne (Gary) Sabean, Digby and a number of nieces and nephews.
Besides his parents, Gerard was predeceased by his baby sister, Flora, and father-in-law, Dave Balser.

Visitation for the late Gerard Kelly will take
place tonight (Monday) from 7-9 p.m. and Tuesday,
Oct. 24, 2006 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. in Stella Maris Church, Louisbourg.
Funeral mass will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Oct 25 2006 in Stella Maris Church, Louisbourg with Fr. Patrick O'Neill officiating.
Burial to follow in Stella Maris Parish Cemetery.
Family flowers only, donations may be made
to the Diabetic Association or a charity of choice.

Arthur Dominey
was born in Burgeo NFD April 16th 1917. He Joined The Merchant Marine in 1940 transferred to the army for 4 months and asked to be returned to the Merchant Marine. He first served on the S.S Mariposa, in a convoy of 46 ships and 5 lost. He also served on the The Lord Kelvin and Galarite and he served as boson on the Evelyn B.
